DE HERSENSTICHTING (THE BRAIN FOUNDATION)
A GRAPHIC TIMELINE ON BRAIN VISUALIZATION TECHNIQUES THROUGH THE YEARS COMMISSIONED BY THE BRAIN FOUNDATION IN COOPERATION WITH MEDICAL ILLUSTRATOR MAARTJE KUNEN.
In cooperation with Maartje Kunen (medical illustrator) we made an illustration for the corridor of the new office of The Brain Foundation. The wall shows the development of brain visualization techniques in seven steps. The wall is an interplay of medical illustrations framed by graphic organic patterns.
The visualization techniques
Golgi’s method, Positron Emission Tomography (PET), Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), fMRI, DTI, MRE.
Design of the elements
The illustrations we used to design the patterns in the background were inspired by Matisse's cut-outs*. We cut out seven brain parts and scanned them. This analogue intervention creates an organic image and pattern alongside the vector graphics (illustrations by Maartje Kunen).
* In his late work, Matisse used cut-outs because he was physically limited in his painting.
